Ho do you orchestrate your intralogistics operations when you have AGVs and AMRs from different vendors, traditional forklifts, conveyor belts and people working side-by-side in your warehouse and production facilities?
Our guest today is Wolfgang Hackenberg, one of the founders of Synaos, a startup based in Germany that is building a hardware-agnostic intralogistics management platform.
Together with our hosts Boris Felgendreher and Marco Prüglmeier talk about the following topics:
- The short version of what Synaos is trying to accomplish with their integrated software platform to manage intralogistics operations
- Wolfgang's background in the automotive industry and as a startup founder
- The VDA 5050 interface standard and the role the automotive OEMs played in the development
- Continuous realt-time optimization: How to calculation 250.000 solutions per second
- The typical situation in toady's intralogistics operations with a very heterogenous landscape of hardware
- The current and future capabilities of the VDA 5050 standard. How global is the standard and how does it compete internationally?
- What criteria buyers should use to evaluate systems like the one Synaos develops
- How much of intralogistics will be automated in the future vs. requiring manual intervention?
- What the challenges are around integrating manual, analog systems and personnel with automation
- Wolfgang's vision for logistics in the future
- And much more

Folge vom 21.03.2022How to do better Route Planning and Optimization (Florian Merget, Co-Founder, Greenplan)Today we will take a deep dive into the world of route planning and route optimization. Our guest Florian Merget is co-founder of Greenplan, a startup that was recently spun out of DHL. Greenplan’s algorithm promises to do a better job at planning and optimizing routes for last mile, road freight and even field service management. Together with our host Boris Felgendreher, Florian talked about the following topics: - The origins and founding story of Greenplan. The recent Management Buyout and new setup for Greenplan outside of DHL - How route planning/optimization has evolved over the years - What factors are driving the need and demand for route planning/optimization - The difference between algorithms and AI in route planning and the pros and cons of each - How Greenplan is different from other route planning solutions - The data quality problem - How route planning solutions fit into existing IT infrastructure and can be integrated with TMSs and ERPs - The changing role of dispatchers - Greenplan's plans for the future - and much more Helpful links: Our supporters GreyOrange: https://www.greyorange.com/ Greenplan: https://greenplan.de/en-us Florian Merget on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/greenplan-florian-merget/ Boris Felgendreher on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/borisfelgendreher/

Folge vom 22.02.2022SLAM - The Key Technology for Autonomous Vehicles in Logistics (Prof. Cyrill Stachniss, University of Bonn)In today's episode we will take a deep dive into the topic of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). SLAM is a method used for autonomous vehicles such as AMRs in logistics for example that lets you build a map and localize your vehicles in that map at the same time. SLAM algorithms allow vehicles to map out unknown environments. It’s one of those things we should all know about in more detail in order to understand how autonomous vehicles in logistics are able to do what they do. Today's guest is a leading expert in the field of SLAM. Cyrill Stachniss is a full professor at the University of Bonn and heads the Photogrammetry and Robotics Lab. In his research, he focuses on probabilistic techniques for mobile robotics, perception, and navigation. The main application areas of his research are autonomous service robots, agricultural robotics, and self-driving cars. He has co-authored over 250 publications, has won several best paper awards, and has coordinated multiple large research projects on the national and European level. This podcast is hosted by Marco Prüglmeier. Together Marco and Cyrill cover the following topics: - A definition and explanation of SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) - Where is SLAM being used - How the SLAM algorithm actually evolved over time and what Carl Friedrich Gauss has to do with it - The different categories of SLAM systems, how they work and what use cases they are best suited for - How SLAM systems are deployed in the world of logistics - Advantages of SLAM for robots in logistics - What problems and issues to look out for when implementing SLAM in logistics and warehouse situations with highly repetitive or highly dynamic environments - What the latest fields of research to advance SLAM technology are Helpful links: Webinar with JYSK and GreyOrange: https://bvl-digital.de/webinare/sendeplan/how-flexible-automation-helped-jysk-cope-with-the-unexpected-peaks-during-the-pandemic-and-support-their-ecommerce-growth/ YouTube Video on SLAM with Cyrill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87S82fh4rI4 Another YouTube Video on SLAM with Cyrill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuRCJ2fegcc To connect with Cyrill on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cyrill-stachniss-736233173/

Folge vom 03.02.2022How Real is the US Truck Driver Shortage? (Steve Viscelli, Political Sociologist, University of Pennsylvania)Steve Viscelli is a political sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania where he studies freight transportation and autonomous trucks. He's also the author of the book "The Big Rig: Trucking and the Decline of the American Dream" in which he explains how long-haul trucking went from being one of the best blue-collar jobs in the US to one of the toughest. His current book project "Driverless? Autonomous Trucks and the Future of the American Trucker" explores self-driving trucks and their potential impacts on labor and the environment. Steve has appeared on CBS News 60 Minutes and most recently on an episode of the Lex Fridman podcast. In this episode of The Logistics Tribe, Steve talks to our host Jonah McIntire about the following topics: - Steve's views on the common narrative that the truck transportation industry in the US is about 80.000 drivers short and that the shortage is only getting worse because many drivers are nearing retirement age - The problem of getting people into the profession vs. keeping people inside the profession - What the reasons are that a lot of drivers are leaving the trucking profession and what they are leaving the profession for - What Steve thinks about various initiatives from the current US administration, for example the "under 21 program" - What the wage and working conditions are really like in different segments of the truck driving business - How real is the infamous 80.000 driver shortage number? - How driver training programs work and how they need to be improved - Potential solutions to the various structural problems in the industry - What role existing and new technology can play - Why drivers are still paid by the mile and what problems arise from that approach - Why the driver shortage is a very "convenient narrative" - What influence can transportation procurement professionals play in improving driver conditions - and more Helpful Links: Steve Viscelli's website: https://www.steveviscelli.com/ Steve Viscelli's podcast episode with Lex Fridman: https://youtu.be/a3Wpy6gE4So Jonah McIntire (Hoste) on LinkedIn: https://nl.linkedin.com/in/jonahmcintire Boris Felgendreher (Founder of The Logistics Tribe) on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/borisfelgendreher/ Our great supporters GreyOrange: https://www.greyorange.com/ BVL Webinar “How flexible automation helped Jysk cope with the unexpected peaks during the pandemic and support their ecommerce growth” on Feb 24, 2022: https://bvl-digital.de/webinare/sendeplan/how-flexible-automation-helped-jysk-cope-with-the-unexpected-peaks-during-the-pandemic-and-support-their-ecommerce-growth/
