The South China Sea has long been the cause of a territorial dispute between China, the Philippines and other nations. With the step up of military operations, there are fears that the area is becoming a flashpoint. An international tribunal this week ruled that Beijing’s expansive territorial claims carry no legal or historical basis. Yet China says it will not abide by the ruling.

Gay rights activist Maurice Tomlinson was a respected lawyer in his native Jamaica. But he had to flee the country after several death threats because of his homosexuality. Jamaica is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be gay. Tomlinson is now based in Canada and continues his work.
