The 200 year reign of the British Raj was dominated by numerous famines, rebellions, economic exploitation on a massive scale. On the other hand the British oversaw social reform, the creation of an education system, a sophisticated civil service and heavy investment in infrastructure. So does Britain owe reparations to India for wrongdoings perpetrated during colonisation? Dr Shashi Tharoor, Indian MP put the case forward for reparations in a recent address to the Oxford Union. He discusses this with historian William Dalrymple.
